I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (1943)

"I Walked with a Zombie" (1943) Now one of my favorite films. i thought this movie was easily one of the most stylish horror films i have ever seen. In this film they took the Gothic romance of Jane Eyre and moved it to the tropics and added a touch of Voodoo and came out with a very atmospheric film. A young Canadian nurse (Betsy) is hired to care for Jessica, the wife of a plantation manager (Paul Holland). Jessica seems to be suffering from a kind of mental paralysis as a result of fever. Betsy falls in love with Paul and becomes determined to cure Jessica even if she needs to use voodoo.
cast: James Ellison, Frances Dee, Tom Conway, Edith Barrett.

  1. Jane Eyre, the tropics, voodoo, brain fever, illicit romance, Canucks, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff! What's not to love! Thanks for sharing on this Val Lewton classic, Dawn.

  2. I wanted to watch this film on TCM on Saturday when it was shown, but I missed it. Thanks for mentioning that Lugosi and Karloff both appear in this film. Nice blog, Dawn.

  3. Dawn, it looks to me like a sentence from perhaps another blog got into your last paragraph. That refers to The Body Snatcher with Lugosi and Karloff. They aren't in I Walked With A Zombie. I love that movie, by the way. Frances Dee and Tom Conway are such a wonderful movie couple, aren't they? I always have to watch it whenver it is on!

  5. It's too bad that Tom Conway, George Sanders' brother, didn't get better parts. Later in life, I know he battled alcoholism, but he was great in one of the creepiest of all episodes of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS (the one about the ventriloquist and the glass eye).
